The Indian Language School was established on April 14th 1982 at the ICA Centre at No. 11 Johnson Street, Ilupeju, Lagos, under the umbrella of the High Commission of India in Nigeria and is run by a Board of Trustees. The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. It is a co-educational school which follows an inclusive policy and grants admission to all Indian students.
Indian Language School began with just 90 students and a staff of the Principal and 5 teachers. Encouraged by the overwhelming response from parents, it was decided that the school should be expanded to accommodate students up to Grade VI. The student strength grew to 400. Adjacent buildings were acquired. Subsequently Senior classes were started up to Grade XII. So far 24 batches of students have appeared for the Grade X Secondary School Examinations and 21 batches have appeared for the Grade XII Senior School Certificate Examinations. We have produced excellent results, even CBSE ranks, in spite of being the only school of the kind in West Africa and facing the disadvantages of being unable to co-ordinate with other CBSE schools on a regular basis.
In 2002, the middle school and senior school classes were shifted to a newly constructed building on the school's property at No 9 Oba Nle Aro Avenue, Ilupeju. Today the school has a student strength of over 2000 students.
A factor that contributes to the unique character of the school is that it is truly representative of the cultural and linguistic diversity of India, as there are students and staff from all parts of India. We capitalize on this advantage by incorporating this diversity into our curricular and co-curricular activities. The school aims to develop in pupils an appreciation of the richness and variety of India and respect for each other and to keep them abreast of events in India. Being based in Nigeria, students of ILS also have the opportunity of being enriched by first hand experience of another vibrant nation.
Our Vision
Our vision is to broaden the perspective of our young students and to develop in them attitudes that will shape them into responsible and dynamic global citizens.
